A native of Hampton, VA, Taz is currently making rounds promoting her latest EP titled, Mentally Ill. After the suffering the loss of three friends to suicide, she funneled her pain into her work. Mentally Ill was born, a double entendre illuminating both her electrifying personality and her struggles with mental health.More than a skilled MC, this rapper and mental health advocate uses her artistry to teach acceptance, ultimately removing the stigma around mental illness and emotional distress. By having a passion for hip-hop, Taz has became an entrepreneur and pop culture for the community. She has released her project, Mentally iLL, that relays a vital message about what she has been through and experiences. After losing friends, who battle with mental illnesses, it was her honor to serve her way of thinking and to dive into her struggles. We caught up with Hampton native and discussed what her motivation and passion was behind it, how she created her agency and more.
RESPECT.: What’s your motivation behind your music?
I started rapping as soon as I heard the Warm Up mixtape by J. Cole. As of January 28th 2019, I released my project, Mentally iLL, on J. Cole’s birthday. My motivation are real life experiences that varies with what projects that I’m working on. Hip-hop has been and most people ask, “What’s your name and where you from?” Nipsey Hussle’s Crenshaw EP & Marathon brand was the blueprint that motivated me while building my C.A.S. brand and music catalogue. Taz is a recording artist and entrepreneur from Hampton, Virginia. Through her former web-series The Tazmania Show she’s interviewed many celebrities, and worked for respected companies such as BET, Viacom, and Vibe Magazine. Today, she is CEO of C.A.S. Agency, a full service consulting and entertainment company specializing in media coverage and event production.
Within the last couple of years Taz has become a hardcore advocate for mental health awareness. After her own battles with depression, anxiety, and losing friends to suicide, she decided to use her platform to bring awareness to it. In January, Taz will be dropping her highly anticipated 5th EP, Mentally iLL. The title serves as a double entendre to represent Taz’s genius as well as her openness about mental illness and suicide. She was featured in several publications including Respect Magazine, Huffington Post, Karen Civil, & Hip Hop Since 1987. TAZ has positioned herself as a cultural influencer & her resume includes Viacom, BET Networks, Revolt TV, CBS Radio, Sony Pictures, Vibe Magazine, Broccoli City Fest, & SXSW. In 2018, TAZ released two EP’s Hampton & Seven Five; & she is now prepping to release her forthcoming EP Mentally iLL.
TAZ has partnered with NAMI (National Alliance on MentaI Illness) & she has been delivering speeches on mental health awareness & suicide prevention to high schools, & colleges nationwide. After privately battling with depression, anxiety, & losing several to suicide, TAZ decided that it was time to end the silence & user her voice to encourage others to speak up & ask for help! Mentally iLL is TAZ’s best body of work to date & she plans to use her music to help “Heal the iLL.”
